A Powerhouse: “WinPerry” (Winfrey & Perry)

EMBRACING YOU

Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry are teaming up again as two powerful individuals to create one common goal, successful shows! Back in January 2010, Oprah Winfrey (Harpo Productions) partnered with the Discovery Communications (DISCA) and hasn’t been reaching their anticipated triumph. Although she captured attention with "The Rosie O’Donnell show," it was shortly lived and cancelled earlier this year. As a result, the network eliminated some staff members. However, the ratings have sky-rocketed with one its most successful shows, “Welcome to Sweetie Pies.”
Tyler Perry has had a long run with TBS, first “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne,” then “Meet the Browns,” and now “For Better or Worse.” Perry kept the ball rolling with airing as many shows under his new model in a short time to reach syndication. From 2007 through August 2012, “House of Payne” aired 254 new sitcom episodes and “Meet the Browns” lasted 140 episodes from early 2009 through November last year. Meanwhile, “For Better or Worse” will keep its commitment to TBS with 34 new episodes aired and 11 more to go with the second season.
Journalist Rodney Ho stated, “TBS is no longer focused as much on the African-American audience, especially after it picked up talk show host Conan O’Brien last year. Conan was not a good coupling with the Tyler Perry series (which Conan made fun of at times).” TBS moved Perry shows to the “less popular viewing night of Friday” since Conan aired during the other weekdays. Perry then set out to find a new home for his scripted sitcoms which led to him “executive producing, writing, and directing two new scripted series for a mid-2013 premiere on OWN.” Not only will this place Perry in a collaborator status instead of a potential competitor, it also marks the OWN’s first venture into scripted programming.
According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, the New York Times stated Perry considered collaborating with Lionsgate Entertainment to renovate the TV Guide Channel. He contemplated on creating his own cable network to be called Tyler TV. Several business executives deemed the idea a creative and financial challenge simply because of re-branding issues and “pay-TV distributors would have the right to renegotiate their carriage agreements.” Which many of you may know, this is not WinPerry’s first team project, in 2009 they both executive produced the hit movie-Precious. Oprah, known for her successful journalist and businesswoman skills and Perry for his successful writing and businessman skills, it only makes sense that they create a powerhouse together.
This creates positive press for OWN’s audience and advertisers. Now we all have something to look forward too. As a dedicated supporter, writer, also a future businesswoman and producer, I think it’s a great decision for both parties. Although they have different backgrounds they are aligned because of their stories of hardship and triumph; which exudes inspiration. To embrace each other as two collaborators for the greater good will have a powerful outcome. One day I have hopes for working with both of them and gaining knowledge and experience along the way.

I hope that these words encourages anyone who reads them.
